Mentoring is one of the most valuable practices to tackle the most prominent challenges of our time: the reduction of social inequalities, skill gaps and unemployment rates in a European society marked by successive crises that make not only our values tremble.
So what is mentoring exactly about? It is a community practice of education and support with many applications that helps the most vulnerable, empowers them and embarks citizens on the path of civic and social engagement. In fact, high school students, apprentices, workers or retired individuals accompany children, adolescents and young adults who, thanks to them, gain competences, taste for learning and schooling, find their career path or their first job. Often this is a precious way to connect social policies with those who really need them. Notably by enlarging horizons of those who have less opportunities.
Research shows that mentoring has proven to be a solution that has direct impact with lasting effects to provide support, promote success and development for all. Actually, you can provoke that it clicks for young or older people in a relatively short period, which is rare in the field of education and social integration. That is why the mentoring community is growing, researching, organising at all levels and increasingly realising that is has its part to play in the realisation of a social Europe. Yes, mentoring is a European issue, at the heart of what we call the European pillar of social rights and spot-on with the European year of youth.
In the latest report on the European Education Area, Members of the European Parliament have therefore clearly underlined the benefits of mentoring for educational systems, businesses and our society as a whole. They call for a framework on civic and social competences to recognise the pedagogical role of such non-formal education. Also to value the commitment of solidarity of the mentor. Actually, the development of mentoring certification and labelling, as well as the establishment of legal frameworks and the earmarking of funds, would considerably contribute to the promotion of the practice and thereby the reduction of social inequalities.
Today, with this event, it is the first time ever that the mentoring community is staged in the European Parliament. EU decision-makers and stakeholders come together to discuss ways forward. As everyone will agree that more needs to be done to create a favourable environment for the practice of mentoring to flourish across Member States. Most importantly for Europe to become a true educational power.
