Texte | Participatory and community-based forms of social problem analysis are core elements of empowerment and change “from below” around the globe. Related processes and methodologies have proven effective in fighting social inequalities and finding useful and sustainable solutions leading towards progressive social transformation.
The summer school with a one-week in-person meeting in mid-June in the Austrian Alps invites students, activists, academics, unionists, community workers, members of non-government organizations and governmental entities alike to build a community of practice in Participatory Action Research. Together with our social partner in Innsbruck, the Waldhüttl community project, we learn about and reflect on participatory problem analysis and political action.
The course welcomes people who have different levels of experience in participatory processes and community work or who hope to conduct and apply community-based research (CBR) and organization in their work. Camp members are based across different countries in Europe and beyond. We use tailormade methodologies to develop participants’ knowledge of, and skills in, participatory research methods and expand their capacity for collaborative action research.
Practical Methods and Pedagogy
We use experiential methods and pedagogical means to go beyond traditional didactics:
- introduction to the history, practice and tools of participatory action research
- walking conversations and reflections in an Alpine environment
- journaling: writing research and reflection
- alternative tour through Innsbruck, together with local activists
- solidarity activities: group and community building, Theater of the Oppressed and other artistic exercises
- case-study units and plenary sessions with joint reflections
- support for the development of individual plans through small groups
Since the 4th edition in 2024, Suttneruni organizes this summer school together with European universities. This international short course presents an excellent opportunity for students and staff from our partners to participate, with the added advantage of receiving ERASMUS+ financial support to attend this Blended Intensive Programme, BIP CAMP for short. Furthermore, we continue to encourage applications from individuals worldwide, especially those from the Global South, marginalized groups, and minorities.
