In the face of an ever more obvious exclusion of so many voices from knowledge production, calls for decolonizing academia have been growing. However, practical-utopian alternatives how higher education could do better remain often blurred or little known, particularly regarding research capacity building.
This paper presents an example of how a socio-cultural grassroots project in Austria that is characterized by no-border principles welcomed an academic course as a social partner. Whereas this community project usually serves as a home for Roma from marginalized settlements in southeastern Europe, in 2021 it turned into a teaching and learning environment for international researchers and activists for one week. Matching the aim of the summer school, i.e. capacity building in Participatory Action Research, participants experienced the lived solidarity in a place that brings together transnationally mobile people with “locals” in stunning ways. Hence, learning about the history of activist social work and the practical ways of putting community life against social exclusion became part of the “curriculum”.
The presentation will briefly outline the current debate and the lack of knowledge. To further a general discussion, we present the case and draw consequences for the development and transfer of the model, based on the course evaluation and our self-criticism. |
