Young people are especially vulnerable to the effects of climate crisis. Evidence on massive
detrimental effects on their mental health is burgeoning. This trend will only worsen in future an increasingly affect young people in Austria. Diverse young people have different
experiences and health outcomes depending on a unique interplay of multiple socio-economic and climate-specific factors. Although acknowledgement and support from adults and local communities are central for navigating such circumstances, they are often missing in everyday life. While specialized services capable of providing climate-informed mental health care are emerging globally, they are still unavailable in Austria.
This project recognizes historic and ongoing socio-economic and ecological injustice that fuels health inequalities, along with current limitations of “research monocultures” and existing service models in addressing such complex challenges. Hence, we propose a participatory action research agenda to partner with diverse stakeholders and co-create climate-informed caring communal spaces capable of addressing these limitations.
To accomplish that we will: (a) collaborate with climate activists, diverse young people, and
practitioners to co-create and co-evaluate a novel service model – 3C Network; (b) learn about their needs and concerns to ensure smooth implementation and sustainability; and (c) employ transdisciplinary expertise to facilitate engagement, knowledge transfer, and dissemination. Hence, our project has a potential to establish a unique local network of organizations and individuals to care FOR and WITH young people across the continuum of diverse needs; and to generate knowledge and future research questions for advancing global research on mental health amidst climate crisis. |
